The way we see it…
It is important to have events and markers in our lives which offer a “clean slate” opportunity to be “our best ever!”
In September, first day of school pictures and posts on social media both serve as a reminder of the concept of the “clean slate” or new opportunity experience. That “clean slate” feeling is often the driver to motivate someone to train and race for an event. Many runners and walkers toe the line with a “this could be my best race ever” feeling.
The range of experiences while training as well as racing varies from fun and positive experiences, to a painful and everything went wrong kind of experience. However, every once in a great while, there is a magical, almost euphoric Personal Record race and break through workout.
Let’s be clear, during a successful goal, meeting, race, or training session, there are many challenging and difficult points in the event. It’s not all cheers and euphoria. It’s a lot of hard work! While enduring suffering and pain, you pair the hard work with success. The next time you are training or racing and you bump into that suffering, you lean in a bit more and push through because you know it is in those moments that you feel a sense of accomplishment. Many times when the hardworking athlete says, “I had a great workout…” it means the workout was very challenging. They had moments when they were pushed to their limits yet they persevered. Great does not describe how they felt during the workout, It described the sense of accomplishment following the workout. This why at ActiveEDGE we utilize periodization and progress training. Physically and psychologically we work through those battles in a supportive and “fun” workout. These workouts are done either in a class, personal training session, or workouts “prescribed” by your physical therapist/trainer. We know, if you put in the work and challenge yourself to extend your barriers you will be satisfied with your success.
The concept of event training is a primary reason why we have partnered with Hood to Coast to create a supportive and structured training group for all fitness and experience levels. HTC/ActiveEDGE running and walking group is a FUN, supportive, and effective training group to help you prepare for any event. (Not just Hood to Coast Relay). You can line up on the starting line confident, prepared, hopeful, and even excited that this may be your best event ever.
Periodization and progressive phases of training includes resting at carefully timed phases to allow for optimum performance. This applies to ANY individual or anyone whom is training for a sport or event such as: golf, cycling, walking, running, or even a High School reunion. Everyone will and can benefit from a well laid out plan supervised and adjusted by an experienced coach or trainer.
